On June 3rd, Medtronic revealed a pair of investments that caught the attention of the electrophysiology market. The companies are located on opposite sides of the world, but they share a common focus: intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) catheters.
One investment went to California-based Beluga Medical. The other went to Shenzhen-based CardioACC. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the significance of the deals extends well beyond the size of the checks.
Together, the investments offer insight into where Medtronic believes cardiac ablation is heading and how it plans to strengthen the Affera platform as competition intensifies across electrophysiology.
Medtronic has been clear about its intentions. The company plans to integrate ICE capabilities into its Affera mapping and ablation ecosystem.
Rebecca Seidel, president of Medtronic’s Cardiac Ablation Solutions business, described ICE catheters as a core component of modern ablation procedures and indicated that the Affera platform will evolve to incorporate the technology. The investments were positioned as another step in expanding Medtronic’s leadership position in electrophysiology.
That matters because while pulsed-field ablation continues to dominate headlines, imaging remains fundamental to every procedure. Physicians rely on ICE to visualize anatomy, guide catheter placement, confirm transseptal access, and monitor for complications during treatment.
The market opportunity reflects that growing importance:
Although most procedures still rely on traditional 2D imaging, the next phase of growth is increasingly centered on 4D visualization. These systems provide live volumetric imaging from within the heart, delivering views that approach transesophageal echocardiography quality without requiring general anesthesia.
As a result, ICE is expanding beyond standard ablation procedures into higher-value structural heart interventions and left atrial appendage applications.
Several major players already have commercial products in the category, including:
Prior to these investments, Medtronic lacked a competitive ICE catheter offering. The combination of CardioACC and Beluga Medical changes that position.
CardioACC already markets both 2D and 4D systems, while Beluga Medical is developing a next-generation platform that remains in the pre-market stage. Together, they provide exposure to today’s commercial opportunities as well as future technology development.
Viewed in isolation, the ICE investments appear relatively modest. Viewed alongside Medtronic’s broader 2026 transaction activity, they fit into a much larger strategic narrative.
Compass AI data from LSI highlights several notable transactions completed or announced this year:
Combined, Medtronic announced approximately $1.8 billion in M&A activity alongside a growing number of strategic minority investments.
The timing is notable. Medtronic reported $36.4 billion in FY26 revenue on the same day it announced the ICE investments.
Compared with the headline-grabbing acquisitions, the Beluga and CardioACC transactions are relatively small. Yet they may reveal more about Medtronic’s long-term thinking. Large acquisitions add revenue immediately. Strategic minority positions can secure access to technologies and markets before competitive dynamics fully develop.
A single investment can be viewed as an opportunity. Two investments in the same technology area, announced simultaneously and spanning two continents, look more like a strategic statement.
Medtronic appears to be positioning itself for a future in which intracardiac echocardiography becomes increasingly intertwined with cardiac ablation workflows. By backing both a commercial-stage company and a next-generation developer, the company has established positions across multiple points on the technology curve.
The move also puts competitors on notice. As imaging becomes more central to electrophysiology platforms, ownership of the visualization layer may become just as important as ownership of the ablation technology itself.
If that trend continues, the recent activity around ICE may represent the beginning of a much broader competitive race rather than the end of one.
