Updated COVID-19 Forecasts: Global Medical Devices & Diagnostics Markets by Technology Segment

Overview

In May 2020 -- using our experience analyzing developments and trends in the medical diagnostics and devices (MD&D) market over the past 40 years -- we presented our economically-modeled opinions regarding what the likely impact of the COVID-19 pandemic would be on the individual MD&D technology markets through 2024. This was followed by a June 2020 report giving our assessment of: a) the estimated exposure of the 45 top global MD&D suppliers; and b) opportunities for MD&D suppliers -- both as a group and as individual firms -- to emerge from the pandemic stronger and positioned to participate in and implement the changing face of health care delivery globally.

Since our initial reports were issued, the COVID-19 pandemic has extended its disruptive impact beyond our original estimates, especially in the key U.S. market that accounts for the largest share of the global MD&D market. As such, we are now (July 2020) presenting revised recovery forecasts for the various MD&D technology segments through 2024 based on the current COVID-19 environment. The data compare the revised COVID-19 forecasts with what we would have expected market growth to be normally and details the share of recovery each year. Equally important -- since the pandemic’s duration and impact remain uncertain -- this report provides a working tool (Excel models) for MD&D companies to consider alternative forecasts depending on how the pandemic proceeds and compared to their internal calculations based on proprietary data.
