Neurosurgery includes a wide range of open and minimally invasive procedures performed on the brain and nervous system. The primary types neurosurgery procedures are surgeries for traumatic brain injury, such as excision of damaged brain tissue or repair of bleeding blood vessels in the brain; ventricular and shunt surgeries; surgeries for vascular lesions in the brain including repair of cerebral hemorrhage and aneurysms; cranial tumor surgeries; cranioplasties; and peripheral nerve procedures such as nerve stimulation, nerve excision, and neuroplasty procedures. In 2017, the number of neurosurgery procedures performed worldwide totaled approximately 3.6 million. The number of procedures per year is forecast to grow at a 1.9% compound annual rate over the 2017-2022 interval, exceeding 3.9 million by 2022.
