LSI's Medtech Startup Tracker is focused exclusively on covering the privately-held innovators changing the medical device landscape. Here are some of the interesting startups we’ve recently profiled:

Vomaris Innovations is using bioelectric technology to enhance wound healing

When a wound is present, the natural electrical state of the skin is disrupted. Vomaris Innovations’ patented V.Dox Technology incorporates microcell batteries into wound dressings to mimic the skin’s physiologic electrical activity to support the body’s natural healing process. To-date, the company has raised approximately $17.7M in funding. Key strategics in the wound management market include 3M, Ethicon, and Smith & Nephew.

StimScience raises $6M in Seed funding round

The neuroscience startup is developing a consumer device that will help improve quality of sleep. StimScience has already completed a prototype for its non-invasive, personalized brain stimulation device. When compared to other consumer devices marketed to improve sleep quality, StimScience touts their proprietary machine learning algorithm that personalizes therapy as it collects more sleep data from the user. The company is currently recruiting participants for an in-home beta trial of its technology.

270Surgical – addressing challenges in the field of minimally invasive surgery

The company is developing and commercializing the SurroundScope System, a laparoscopic camera system aimed at addressing limitations with currently laparoscopic camera systems. The SurroundScope is designed to reduce lens fogging and surgical smoke from obstructing the surgeon’s view. Additionally, the device is the first laparoscopic platform to offer a 270° field-of-view. The company’s technology received FDA 510(k) clearance in November 2019.

S4 Medical closes Series A round for an undisclosed amount

The funding will allow the company to conduct its Investigational Device Exemption study for its esophageal protection system for use during catheter ablation procedures for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. The company’s esolution device has already been tested with leading electrophysiology systems and completed first-in-human testing. When positioned in the esophagus during a catheter ablation procedure, the esolution device applies vacuum force to pull the esophagus inward and rotate it away from ablation energy. The movement of the esophagus prevents fistula formation and allows electrophysiologists to confidently perform the ablation procedure. Major players with arrythmia ablation solutions that could benefit from the inclusion of this technology include Abbott, BioSense Webster, and Boston Scientific.

Discure – a next-generation solution for degenerative disc disease

Degenerative disc disease (DDD), which affects approximately 30 million people, is one of the preeminent sources of back pain. Discure is currently developing a device to reverse degenerative disc disease as an alternative to traditional surgical approaches. The minimally invasive implant will use a novel electric technique to reverse the process of DDD and prevent back pain. DePuy Synthes, NuVasive, and Zimmer Biomet are some of the key strategics in the spinal surgery market. Discure is a Rainbow Medical portfolio company.

Brattea raises $20M in Series B round

Funds from the round will be used to accelerate clinical studies, as well as explore new indications for the company’s renal denervation ablation system. The first indication for use for the company’s technology will be for the treatment of hypertension. Future indications for use in the company’s pipeline include management of cancer pain and diabetes. Medtronic and ReCor Medical are also developing renal denervation products.
